I heard this girl in my class got accepted into Berkley. I was pretty amazed since it’s Berkeley, hello BERKELEY. Anyways, so I asked her “Do you get grades?” and she got all offended saying, “yea I get good grades! Why wouldn’t I get good grades?! ‘Cause I’m black?!” I didn’t even fucken mean it that way. I know I should have stated the question differently like, ‘what did you get on your transcript for them to accept you?’, but she really didn’t have to take it that way. It was so uncalled for. I’m sorry but just because you’re black doesn’t mean everyone is out to get you or to judge you by your racial profile. Maybe I asked because you seemed like a total dumb-ass bitch. Have you thought of that? Why does it have to be your race? God. People these days.
I know African Americans have a long history of discrimination and racial prejudice, but don’t go inflicting your paranoia and sensitivity on everyone who said something negative [or in this case, sounds negative] to you. Asians [specifically Vietnamese girls] were and still are being sold and trade like merchandises, you know. You don’t see me going around saying, it’s cause I’m Asian?! UGH. I really don’t think using the unfortunate history of your people as an accusation make you right. In fact, it makes you look like you’re proud you were discriminated against because you can take racial offense in everything people say about you.

Gosh, that girl is pretty intense! I agree with what you said. It sounds like she’s proud of being discriminated because she stands out. I really don’t like it when people assume that you really care about their race when you don’t.

It gets really annoying when people are also like “Oh you’re smart because you’re Asian”. Not because you’re a hard worker or anything, but BECAUSE YOU’RE ASIAN. That’s my biggest pet peeve.
Berkeley is somewhat weird this year. Some highly deserving people were denied and some weird people like me got accepted by a fluke.
I think it’s also on what major you applied under and how impacted it is. If you’re going for engineering or biological sciences, or even journalism, it’s really difficult and competitive. However, majors like music, psychology, etc… are a bit easier.
You really need to bust out those AP classes and try to score those 4’s and 5’s. Take the SAT at least twice. Once junior year and again senior year. Use the summer before senior year to study and take it in October when it’s somewhat fresh and before the November college application chaos. Go beyond the school clubs. Find something that you’re really passionate about and pursue it. Be the all around motivated student. However, you have to do it because you love it, not because you need it for your application.
Are you in the PACE program at JFK? My best friend is a pacer there and she’s also a Berkeley admit. She did four years of track and field, mock trial, and marching band. However, her grades aren’t really strong since she did have a couple of C’s and B’s, but she totally nailed the SAT and the AP exams. She got in as a psychology major. XD

Well said!!! I totally understand what you mean, but I can never put the words out there so people get what I mean. But you said it all. And I agree, it’s annoying to see that when people mean no offense and are just asking a simple question. When people do that it does seem like they are proud of it.

Wow… someone definitely got defensive and offensive immediately. Did you get the chance to explain yourself? I hate it when people jump the gun and assume right away what you’re trying to mean if it’s unclear to them. Some people are too ignorant to ask you for clarification on your question. I agree with Stephanie, there’s definitely insecurity there, but it’s probably because she got the down look too many times.

I agree with you on this post. I would have been mad at the way she reacted as well. I mean it could have been anything that got her into Berkeley. Grades, clubs, etc, you know? People are overly sensitive in our world, and it sucks.

I don’t think Asians have gotten much credit considering how much they’ve been through. I also think some African Americans use their race to manipulate people. There’s this teacher at my school and she is absolutly horrible! She plays extreme favorites and has purposley failed students for no reason. The school board knows about it but she threatens them that if she’s fire she will tell the news people and everybody that it was because of her race. So she keeps failing good students
